Now you see Mat - it's the scientific and intellectually stimulating conversations that I miss most from back home...look forward to discussing the matter further over a pint in the Parlour...

Andy.. I will refer you to: Gregory (2008) “Penguins facing a rocky road to survive”; The New Zealand Herald and Brockie (2007) “Notes on New Zealand mammals 4. Animal road-kill “blackspots””; New Zealand Journal of Zoology, before making any claims as to the road safety status of the penguin.
I cannot find Brockie’s blog to let him know that the penguin is not a mammal or a fish.
I don’t see any mention of bed road-kill in these publication, but, from your photo, it appears the prediction of their distribution is a much more exact science allowing more accurate road signage...

Sal was right hiking Franz Joseph Glacier is one of the best things you can do in New Zealand as once you get to the glacier, after the 1.5km walk there are not so many people, I did it in a group of 14 and it was cool!!!

If you get a chance to get back down to Wellington and you have a bit of time on your hands head to the Karori wildlife reserve, they have kiwis and tuatar and other wildlife and there's quite a nice walk around it.
Also if you're in that general area you should head to Southwards car museum (also has motorbikes)in Paraparamu (excuse the spelling), I spent a few hours there one afternoon with one of my kiwi friends, it's definitely worth a visit.

Just to bring you back down to earth, I'll be sending you some job ads over the next few days as there's a few coming up in our place:))
